today-s learning environments have to prepare students for autonomy, complex thinking, and group work on the solution of authentic problems pertaining to the complex realities of our world. the course will engage participants in a critical examination and use for pedagogical design of student-centered and authentic learning environments in different academic areas and at different educational levels.

course contents include the constructivist description of human learning that explains the need for these types of environments and the ways to design them, the types of activities, resources, and reflection that an effective student-centered facilitator must be able promote (selecting authentic questions and problems that address relevant course objectives, enlisting and engaging students- interest in the problems, scaffolding/supporting students- collaborative and individual efforts, identifying or creating relevant resources and activities to enable students to successfully engage in problem solving, assuming a role that supports students as opposed to leading or telling them, and developing authentic assessment tools that can measure students- progress), and examples to illustrate student-centered and authentic learning environments in different academic areas.

metodología: the learning environment in the course will mirror the types of learning environments we are studying, with the course sessions including readings, case studies, workshops, guest speakers, and a focus on building our course learning community in in-class discussions.
