Descripción

this graduate seminar explores the history of inter-american relations and, more precisely, the history and historiography of us foreign policies toward latin america since 1823. it sets out with a broad survey of the dominant currents in international relations theory, followed by a brief introduction into the history of the historiography dealing with us foreign relations in general. the main part of this seminar, however, focuses on critical junctions in the history of us policies toward latin america, and on the ways historians (and others) have analyzed them over time.

objetivos: apart from deepening basic professional research and teaching skills pertaining to the humanities and social sciences, this seminar seeks to instill not just knowledge of the history of us-latin american relations, but also an understanding of how and why ¿paradigmatic turns¿ in history as a discipline over time have impacted research agendas, including the choice of primary sources, and overarching interpretative frameworks. rather than insisting on a given interpretative approach, this seminar aims at deepening the capacity to analytically distinguish between different approaches, their epistemic foundations, strengths and limitations. conceptos previos: english: advanced passive (listening and reading) skills; at least basic active (speaking and writing) skills. the written work for this course may be in spanish. similar allowances will be made for course presentations if appropriate
